the object of this competition was twofold: creating a tourist pavilion plus making a proposal to organize the pickup places and ticket sales of public transport better. the problem in venice is its water and tides. this is why we wanted to build floating islands on four locations in the water. there are pickup places for boats on each island. we chose to build on water because there is no room to do so in the city itself. it would almost automatically result in a conflict with the architecture and urban development. organizing a large crowd is somewhat easier on water than it would be in an old town with narrow streets. furthermore this way we sail around the problems of high and low tides and we create quiet green spots in this city.
