this project consists of a corporate identity for the area ‘the merode’ and wants make the identity of the area recognizable for its users and visitors. according to the implementation and the position of the different elements, the design allows large diversification possible. the stratification in the design form makes different expressions possible: the vertical construction is consistent with the monumental nature of some sites, whereas a horizontal construction emphasizes the vast nature of the open landscapes and valleys. during the first half of the 19th century the huge demand for pit-props in the area of ‘de merode’ caused the transition from broadleaf to coniferous woods. the design elements are constructed from locally abundant and ready to be chopped down larch. larch is known as the ‘oak amongst conifers’ and is very strong and durable, so it can be used outdoors without having to be preserved. the trunk is often very straight and in time the wood turns to a lovely shade of grey.
